Questions about the HealthWATCH® drug plan:

The HealthWATCH® drug plan separates traditional prescription medications into two levels of coverage or reimbursement, called “tiers.” Together, these two tiers cover the majority of traditional prescription drugs that are used to treat common conditions. By focusing on the management of traditional medications, which are for common conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, the plan can save you up to 10% on your drug plan costs.

And plan members can get savings and exclusive offers at two of Canada’s largest retailers—Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaw banners, including affiliated supermarkets.*

Traditional prescription drugs treat a wide range of common illnesses or conditions like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and many other widely known medical conditions.

The HealthWATCH® drug plan is focused on tiering traditional medications with a policy that supports the use of biosimilars.

No problem! The HealthWATCH® drug plan can integrate seamlessly with other drug plan management strategies, for example, prior authorization, generic substitution, and specialty preferred provider networks that your insurance provider may offer.

The tiers are how the HealthWATCH® drug plan categorizes drug coverage. Drugs on Tier 1 have the highest level of coverage, while Tier 2 offers a lower level of coverage.

By offering two tiers of coverage, the HealthWATCH® drug plan can provide savings of up to 10% on your drug plan costs. To learn how, visit The Solution page of our website.

Tier 1, which is a higher level of coverage, includes most generics and some brand name drugs that are more cost-effective. Tier 2, which offers a lower level of coverage includes some generics and brands (with or without generics) which the HealthWATCH® drug plan team has determined do not demonstrate additional clinical benefit relative to their cost, when compared to Tier 1 drug options that treat the same condition.

If a drug doesn’t work well for an individual, they should talk to their doctor or pharmacist to discuss alternatives. Our Drug Search Tool may help identify medication alternatives that are also on Tier 1.

Your code is available from your administration guide.

The HealthWATCH® drug plan team, which includes pharmacists, leads the decision-making process, guided by the advice of a Clinical Advisory Board. Their goal is to use a plan-member first approach, to find the right balance between drug plan affordability and helping to keep employees healthy and at work.

Some medications are not listed on either Tier 1 or Tier 2 because the plan already covers other more cost-effective drugs for the condition or there are therapies available without a prescription.

Questions about coverage changes:

The HealthWATCH® drug plan team regularly monitors new emerging clinical data and guidelines. Should new evidence become available for medications not listed, the team will consider if this warrants adding the drug to the plan.

Yes. The HealthWATCH® drug plan is an actively managed drug plan. On a monthly basis, medications that are available on the market are reviewed for inclusion on the plan. On a semi-annual basis, medications already on the drug plan may undergo listing changes based on clinical data and guidelines. Listing changes may include delisting or shifts in tiering.

Plan members will be notified at the pharmacy if their prescription drug moves to a different tier. To learn more about options for employees taking Tier 2 drugs, visit The Solution page of our site.
